![]() ![]() ![]() That is not to say that sim makers or mod makers should not strive for believability and accuracy, because that is really what we all want. If the immersion is there and the believability is there, then the enjoyment will come. I don’t care that much if the sounds are a little off. I don’t care what colour corner markers or kerbs are or if every elevation change is modelled to within a few inches. ![]() I got to thinking while I was lapping the circuit, that there are sims out there that may out-do this one in certain areas, but the enjoyment I am getting from this right now not only counterbalances that, but supercedes it. I was playing a sim today, which I can say with certainty, doesn’t have the best graphics out there, possibly not the most accurate physics (I`ll come back to this shortly). But it is this emotion you get back from driving it that makes it a winner. It may well be that the physics or the graphics or the sounds that give you that enjoyment. You certainly aren’t going to favour a sim that you don’t enjoy. I am going to hazard a guess and say it’s probably the enjoyment you get from it. But what is it that makes it my favourite ? Well what makes rFactor someone else’s favourite ? Graphics ? Physics ? Online racing ?. Maybe because I prefer the way the cars behave, the content or even that the online experience. I am not stating that it factually IS the best one, because how do you even begin to quantify that ? It is simply that that it suits me better so I may consider it the best one for me. for example, that RACE07 is my favourite sim, it cannot be wrong. Opinions, by their very definition, cannot be wrong. It would be pretty boring if everyone thought the same. Everyone has differing opinions on the sims we use today and we should be thankful for that. But it can be any number of things such as FFB, sounds, graphics, immersion etc. They obviously have their reasons for not liking or preferring a particular sim. Not everybody likes these sims or has them as their favourites but does that make them bad ? I think the answer can easily be found when you ask yourself, what do rFactor fans get out of rfactor that non- rF fans don’t ? Same for Race07, iRacing, RBR, NetKar Pro etc. Is there a single answer to this ? I’m going to go out on a limb here and say yes. The question of what is it that makes a good sim ? It's also not necessarily all that helpful compared to a well tuned traditional suspension, and can cause the driver some issues if the changes in behavior at different speeds are too large, making the car respond in ways the driver isn't expecting (similarly to some cars with active variable steering ratios).Oh yes, I realise what a can of worms this is. The main point early on with the passive systems was largely to counteract the tendency for the pliable rubber bushings in the suspension to cause large toe-changes during high speed cornering maneuvers, which could really hurt the stability of the car by causing toe out at the rear axle.įor cons? Well it's expensive and complicated, that's one. For cornering at high speeds it's less useful, but can be employed to stabilize the car somewhat. At very high speeds the rear wheels are steering in the same direction as the front wheels, which helps with stability (it acts as if the car has a longer wheelbase) and can make overtaking maneuvers and line changes etc. This can be very helpful for getting into parking spots etc. Many of the older systems were passive (relying entirely on mechanical inputs or just cornering forces alone), but since then active ones have been made as well, ones that figure out what's best to do depending on the speed.Īt very low speeds the active systems usually turn the rear tyres in the opposite direction of the front tyres which makes the car rotate sharper, as if it had a shorter wheelbase. The new Porsche 991 GT3 (road car) also features all wheel steering, as well as many cars before it (like some versions of the Mazda 626). ![]()
